The song describes a desolate landscape with no sign of life except for the Bittern's cry. The bird is perched on the ruins of a palace, which is now in decay and submerged in water. The Bittern sits alone, a sad and lonely monarch of a forgotten place, where even the memory of the people who once lived there has faded away. The song speaks of the passing of time, the fleeting nature of life and the inevitability of death, suggesting that even the Bittern will eventually fly away to another place.
